Subtraction Word Problems

Class Four investigated subtraction word problems today. We took a very simple subtraction problem, 4-1=3 and transformed it into a mathematics story. We then used Padlet to create a wall of words that would give clues to suggest that the story would require a subtraction sum if you were going to turn it into a mathematical problem. Why don't you show your parents this on Padlet. Can you remember any words? Can you use these words to create a subtraction word problem?

Dinosaur Encyclopedia

Class Four have been writing some phenomenal information texts about a dinosaur that they chose. We are going to publish them using Book Creator on the iPads.
The children have done a great job in including as many text type features in their texts as possible. I wonder if any members can remember them and add a comment below?
To warm us up, inspire and generate ideas for their own writing we have used Google Docs to do some collaborative, shared writing about an Allosaurus. This one document was produced by all 30 of our class-members with everybody chipping in to create a fantastic text. Parents, please check it out in your child's Google Drive.

Food Chains

In Thursday's Science lesson we looked at Food chains. A food chain starts with the producer, a living object that produces the energy for the food chain to get started. There is then the prey, an animal that is eaten by a carnivore or omnivore to get its energy. Finally there will be the predator, the animal that gets or hunts for its prey to obtain energy, live and survive.

If you look through our, the humans' food chain, I can say that all humans are grass eaters. What do you think I mean?

The Passive Voice

We are coming to the end of our Information Text Unit for Literacy. We are researching information regarding our chosen dinosaur to create our class encyclopaedia all about dinosaurs. A key feature of Information Texts is that it is written in the passive voice. That is when the subject of the sentence is at the end. Can you take the sentences created from sentence builder and put it in the passive voice on the blog? Can you write a comment about today in the passive voice for the blog? Have a go and we can reply to peer assess if somebody has made a little mistake.

What would you say to your Rugby Schoolmates?

On Thursday 7th March 2013, Highover's Tag Rugby Team finished Runners Up in the North Herts Saracens Tag Rugby Festival. That means that they qualify for the County Finals for the 5th year in a row! What would you say to your schoolmates to big them up? What would you want your schoolmates to say to you if (no, when!) you guys reach this milestone in two years time...if not sooner"

Time Tellers

We have been practicing telling the time and also solving problems to do with time. How many minutes make up an hour? You have to be at school for registration at 8:45 am. How long does it take you to walk, drive or bike to school? So, what time do you need to leave home then?

Habitat Walk

Today, Highover's class 4 went on a habitat walk around our school. Children found 40 some more than 50 habitats around our school. My question to you is why did you put the habitats on your list in your list? What do you think might live in the habitat you listed? Why do you think that animal or plant would 'habit' there?

What a random conversation!

This morning, class 4 started a conversation sharing facts about dinosaurs. This continued to a linked conversation about human beings and how we developed by dinosaurs couldn't. This carried on to how to catch NCs and JBs, cook them, eat them and then develop a community where human beings start working together to create family helping each other! Like us in class 4! We then spoke about adding 1 + 1 and how knowing that means we know what 10 + 10 is, then we know what doubling is, and then multiplication and then ALGEBRA! What a random conversation. Then, somebody
"What is intelligence?"
...and this really got us thinking. We tried to put it in a sentence, but as you can imagine, everyone's sentence was different. Have this conversation with other people, what do they say and think? Do you agree or disagree with them? Will this make you change your mind or develop what you think intelligence is?

Feel Good Week - 11/02/2013 to 17/02/2013

This week is Feel Good Week.

What kind of things make you feel good?
If you don't feel good, what do you do to turn that around and
make you feel better?
What advice would you give someone to turn their frown upside-down?
If I feel a bit down I listen to some songs that make me feel good. One is called Slight Return by a really old band called The Bluetones.

Dinosaur Top Trumps

A really busy session today in topic-based maths. Children practised their measuring and converting measurements in centimetres to millimetres. The children learnt about dinosaurs that were 10 or 20 the size of them. They used their dimensions such as head circumference, height and others then multiplied them to find the dinosaur's body dimensions. Before doing that children came up with a formula to help them multiply any number by ten or twenty. We published our findings and rules these on the ShowMe iPad app so that we can help the entire world with our ShowMe videos! Do you remember what the formula or rules are? Does it work wit ANY number? Can you show us and prove it? How about those of you that came up with a set of rules for x20, will that work with any number? Add it to the blog and prove it!

Capacity

We have been looking at capacity this week. What is it the measurement of? So what might I use to measure capacity? What is the unit of measurement? Do I measure it in centimetres? I was really impressed with the way the children checked the scale of the measuring tools before filling it with water to make sure that the data they recorded was accurate. Good job troopers! What tools have you got at home that measure capacity?

Dinosaur skeletons

Dinosaurs can be put into two groups just by looking at their hip bones. Class 4 learnt that some dinosaurs had lizard hipped pelvises whereas others had bird hipped. That means that birds have evolved from dinosaurs and that some can be traced back to  when dinosaurs ruled the world!
I wonder if class 4 can remember the names of any dinosaurs and tell the world whether they were bird hipped or lizard hipped? Have you come across any new ones since our lesson that you can add to the blog? We can then add a link to our dinosaur classification books and make them interactive!

Reach for the Moon!

In PSHCE with Mrs. Brooks, you have all designed rockets with your personal target that you have set yourself. If you could set a target for anybody in the world, what target would you set them to aim for? What goal would you want for them to achieve and why?

The Amazing Romans and the centimetre

We were learning about measurements today. We looked at where the words centi and milli come from and what they mean when you combine them, like centimetre for example. We made our own metre measuring tapes. What did we use our metre measuring tapes to measure? What else could we measure using our metre measuring tapes? We decided that metre measuring tapes were not accurate enough so we decided to use centimetres with our metres to fine-tune and make our measurements more precise. Remind me how many centimetres are there in a metre? What would you measure in centimetres? Would you measure the distance between your house and school in centimetres? Why or why not? Those Romans were just SO clever, but the cleverest Italians come from a special place called Cesinali, Avellino!

Future Meteorologists

So much snow at Highover! We decided to get out and learn about averages, finding out the average snowfall around Highover.

Mathematics - 3 dimensional shapes

This week in Maths, class 4 have been learning about the main features of common 3 dimensional shapes. What are the 3 dimensions of a three dimensional shape? If a face is a feature of a 3D shape what are the others? What 3D shapes do you remember learning about this week? Which 3D shape could have cast this shadow in the photo above? Do you agree or disagree with your classmates suggestions? Thanks to Mr. Worbey for helping take the photo!

Highover Book Blog goes international!

Graph of most popular countries among blog viewers
Highover's Book Blog is now being viewed in all the countries that are shaded in different shades of green. The darker shade of green is the UK, which includes England, where we live. Can you name the other shaded countries? Are our classmates correct or incorrect? A big well done to all class 4 pupils who have commented on it so far!
